Main Beach is good for surf, is shark netted and in season has life guards. The Lagoon nestles behind the main sand spit providing a calm water environment for smaller children. The Riptide restaurant is situated adjacent to the car park. Main Beach is situated 7 minutes walk, or 2 minutes drive from 25 Southbroom Avenue.
Grannys Pool This natural pool, 500 meters from Main Beach, provides a sheltered area for paddling and exploring life in the rock pools as small tropical fish and other sea creatures are brought in and out by the tides.
The general coastline For a wilder beach experience are the beaches from Grannys Pool along Southbroom’s coastline stretching to Umkobi Lagoon by the Trattoria restaurant.
For unspoilt beach and coves nestling amongst the rocks, providing cosy peaceful sun traps to escape from it all!
Southbroom’s own special nature reserves are wildlife areas donated by generous residents. The Frederika Coastal Reserve covers some 8 hectares and borders part of the golf course with blue duiker and bushbuck to look out for and is best reached from the beach. The user friendly Bushbuck Trail is good for abundant bird life and hopefully spotting bushbuck or duiker and is accessed from the tennis courts. The Imbezene River Trail leads through indigenous forest to the river and The Outlook is nice for its indigneous vegetation, rocks and sea views.
Enjoy Geocashing?? We know of cache’s in the Bushbuck Trail and Frederika Reserve !
Riverbend Crocodile Farm Be amazed and view these huge reptiles up close in a natural and landscaped setting. There are plenty of them to see of all sizes and ages and in January and February the hatching demonstrations are a real education. There’s also a Snake House, home to nineteen difference species.
Whale Watching Season
The KwaZulu Natal whale season begins in late May, peaks in late June and some can still be seen heading towards Mozambique in July/August. Later it is common to see the whales heading back towards the Atlantic. Whales breach, lobtail and engage in courtship rituals and Southbroom has some great vantage points from which to whale watch – Main Beach, The Outlook, Granny’s Pool and Southbroom Golf Club verandah. So if you are staying during that period you may be lucky!
The Sardine Run is an experience to behold around the month of June. Billions of sardines cause an amazing spectacle as they travel up the coastline attracting a feeding frenzy of predators such as dolphins, whales, sharks and gannets in their hoards. Locals and tourists flock to see this amazing scene.
An comfortable 50 minute drive brings you to this beautiful area where adrenalin junkie’s are welcome to take a leap from the top of Lehr’s Falls on The Wild Gorge Swing (the highest swing in the world) to depths of 100metres or for something a little more low key, take a walk along the suspension bridge across the gorge! For something less dramatic, a meandering drive in your car through Eland Game Reserve should have you spotting giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, warthogs and more or Leopards Rock Café provides food and refreshment with breathtaking views. http://www.oribigorge.co.za/welcome.htm
